Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has accused former governor of the state, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, of abandoning him politically after receiving a new car from him.
Adeleke made the allegation while reacting to Oyinlola’s recent decision to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state.
According to the governor, Oyinlola had previously complained to him that he did not have a car, prompting him to provide him with a new vehicle.
Adeleke alleged that after collecting the vehicle, the former governor subsequently moved from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the APC and declared that he would not support his re-election bid.
The governor said Oyinlola’s political movement would have little impact on the election, describing him as a “paperweight” in the current political landscape.
“Former Governor Oyinlola complained to me that he doesn’t have a car, and I gave him a new car. He collected the new car, then he went to APM, from APM to APC, saying he will not support me.
Adeleke further suggested that Oyinlola’s decision may have been influenced by financial considerations, questioning whether the former governor had received money from the APC.
The development comes as political parties intensify their campaigns and mobilisation efforts ahead of the August 15 Osun governorship election, with prominent political figures taking positions in support of the various candidates.
Oyinlola, a former governor of Osun State and a prominent figure in the state’s political history, has emerged as one of the notable political personalities backing the APC in the current contest.
The latest exchange underscores the growing political tension in Osun as Governor Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seeks a second term, while the APC and other opposition parties mount efforts to unseat him.
Adeleke’s comments are likely to further heighten the political debate over Oyinlola’s decision and the significance of endorsements by former governors ahead of Saturday’s election.
