The Federal Character Commission (FCC), in collaboration with the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), is set to convene representatives of all 774 Local Government Areas across Nigeria at a national workshop in Abuja.
The two-day workshop, scheduled for August 24 and 25, 2026, will take place at the Tropic Galleria, Abuja, with the theme: “Deepening National Unity Through Grassroots Implementation of the Federal Character Principle.”
The workshop is expected to bring together Local Government leaders and other key stakeholders to deliberate on equitable development, grassroots governance and the fair distribution of socio-economic amenities and infrastructure across the country.
The initiative, organised under the leadership of the FCC Executive Chairman, Hon. Ayo Hulayat Omidiran, in partnership with the Progressive Governors’ Forum, is aimed at strengthening the implementation of the Federal Character principle at the grassroots.
According to the organisers, the gathering will provide a platform to deepen discussions on how government policies and development initiatives can better reflect the principles of fairness, equity and inclusiveness across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas.
The workshop will also focus on identifying practical approaches to improving grassroots governance and ensuring that socio-economic opportunities, infrastructure and public amenities are distributed more equitably among communities.
The participation of Local Government leaders is expected to be central to the discussions, given their proximity to the people and their role in identifying community needs and implementing development initiatives.
The organisers said the success of the workshop would ultimately be measured by the extent to which its outcomes translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians at the grassroots, rather than merely by the quality of discussions held in Abuja.
The event is also expected to provide an opportunity for Local Government representatives to share experiences, exchange ideas and develop practical strategies for strengthening grassroots development.
The Federal Character Commission reaffirmed its commitment to advancing its constitutional mandate of promoting fairness, equity and inclusiveness in the distribution of socio-economic opportunities and development across Nigeria.
