By Aliyu Oyewole

The Oyo State Federal Commissioner of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Prince Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye, has welcomed the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) and representatives of the 774 Local Government Areas to a national workshop scheduled to hold in Abuja.

The two-day workshop, organised by the FCC in conjunction with the Progressive Governors’ Forum, is scheduled for August 24 and 25, 2026, at the Tropic Galleria, Abuja.

The workshop is themed “Deepening National Unity Through Grassroots Implementation of the Federal Character Principle.”

Aleshinloye, who is also the Chairman of the Planning Committee for the workshop, urged all Local Government Executive Chairmen across the country to actively participate in the national gathering.

He said the workshop was designed to deepen discussions on equitable development, strengthen grassroots governance and promote a fairer distribution of socio-economic amenities and infrastructure across Nigeria.

The Oyo FCC Commissioner stressed that the success of the workshop should not be measured only by the quality of discussions in Abuja, but by the extent to which its outcomes translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians at the grassroots.

According to him, Local Government Chairmen have a crucial role to play in the process because they constitute the tier of government closest to the people.

He said their proximity to communities places them in a strategic position to identify grassroots needs, implement development initiatives and ensure that socio-economic amenities and infrastructure are delivered fairly and equitably.

Aleshinloye further said the workshop would provide an important platform for Local Government leaders to share experiences, exchange ideas and develop practical strategies for improving grassroots governance, infrastructure delivery and equitable development.

He commended the leadership of the FCC, under its Executive Chairman, Hon. Ayo Hulayat Omidiran, for championing initiatives aimed at promoting fairness, equity and inclusive development across the country.

The commissioner urged all participating Local Government Executive Chairmen to take advantage of the workshop and contribute meaningfully to the deliberations.

He stressed that the ultimate objective should be to ensure that the decisions and recommendations from the gathering produce measurable impact across communities.

“The real impact of governance is felt at the grassroots,” Aleshinloye said.

The Federal Character Commission said it remains committed to advancing its constitutional mandate of promoting fairness, equity and inclusiveness in the distribution of socio-economic opportunities and development across Nigeria.
