The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, CP Ibrahim Umar Zungura, disclosed this on Thursday, August 27, 2026, during a press briefing on the progress of the investigation into the incident.

The incident occurred on Monday, August 24, when the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ikire, and his men responded to a distress call in the Naira & Kobo area of the town.

According to the police, upon arrival at the scene, the officers were confronted by about 30 armed hoodlums who allegedly attacked them and forcefully snatched an AK-47 rifle from one of the policemen.

The police said one of the hoodlums, identified as Ayewo, subsequently opened fire sporadically with the stolen rifle, hitting three policemen and two passers-by.

The two passers-by later died from their injuries, while the injured police officers were taken to a hospital for medical treatment. The hoodlums reportedly escaped with the police rifle.

The suspects were identified as Sikiru Ademola Adedeji, 21; Olalere Taiwo, 21; Olalere Ademola, 26; and Bankole Abiodun, 20.

The police also said one cutlass-like object was recovered from the suspects.

According to the Commissioner, preliminary interrogation revealed that the suspects allegedly confessed to being political thugs and identified Ayewo, whose other name remains unknown, as the leader of their faction.

The suspects reportedly told investigators that Ayewo was the individual who fired the stolen AK-47 rifle during the incident.

The police said efforts were ongoing to apprehend Ayewo and other suspects still at large.

The Commissioner commended the police operatives involved in the investigation, praising their professionalism, dedication and use of intelligence and technical capabilities in tracking down the suspects.
