Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has declared that he will become the first governor in the state’s democratic history to successfully hand over power to his successor.
Makinde made the declaration while speaking to members of the Christ Apostolic Church, where he called for peace, unity and responsible political engagement in the state.
According to the governor, no elected governor in Oyo State since the return to democratic rule has handed over to a successor at the completion of his tenure.
“In the democratic history of Oyo State, no governor has handed over to his successor. I will be the first governor to hand over to my successor,” Makinde said.
The governor urged residents, political leaders and religious bodies to prioritise peace and unity, stressing the importance of protecting the democratic gains recorded in the state.
Makinde’s statement comes amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political parties and aspirants already positioning themselves for various elective positions across Oyo State.
The governor, who assumed office in May 2019 and secured re-election in 2023, is constitutionally limited to two terms in office.
His declaration therefore places renewed attention on the political transition expected in Oyo State after the expiration of his tenure in 2027.
Makinde also appealed to stakeholders to avoid actions capable of creating division, emphasising that peace and unity remain critical to the development and stability of the state.
