8 Zamfara Assembly Member Quits APC

By Aliyu Oyewole
Eight members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have resigned their membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing worsening insecurity, alleged injustice and unpaid salaries and allowances.
The lawmakers announced their resignation on Sunday, October 4, 2026, in a fresh political development that could further unsettle the APC’s structure in Zamfara ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The lawmakers are Aliyu Kagara, representing Talata Mafara South; Ibrahim Bakura, Bakura; Faruk Dosara, Maradun I; Bashir Masama, Bukkuyum North; Muktaru Kaura, Kaura North; Nasiru Abdullahi, Maru North; Bashar Bello, Bungudu West; and Bashar Aliyu, Gummi I.
In their separate resignation letters, the lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction with the security situation in the state and alleged that the APC and the state government had failed to adequately address the challenges confronting their constituents.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Kagara alleged that insecurity in rural communities had worsened despite concerns previously raised by the lawmakers.
He also claimed that the lawmakers had gone for 32 months without receiving their salaries, allowances and other entitlements.
“This is our 32 months without salary, allowances and other entitlements as honourable members,” Kagara said, according to reports.
The lawmakers also accused the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal of failing to give adequate attention to the security challenges affecting rural communities.
Kagara said their earlier disagreements with the governor were linked to their attempts to raise security concerns on the floor of the Assembly, adding that the dispute eventually contributed to their suspension and subsequent political realignment.
APC reacts
The Zamfara State APC said it had yet to receive the lawmakers’ resignation letters officially.
The party’s Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Birnin-Magaji, said the APC had only seen the letters circulating on social media and was awaiting official communication through the lawmakers’ respective political wards and local government executives.
“We are still waiting for their correspondence from their respective political wards after reaching their local government executives, which would later be forwarded to us,” he said.
He added that the party was not aware of any grievances from the lawmakers before the resignation letters surfaced.
The lawmakers were reportedly suspended by the APC following an earlier dispute involving allegations that they attempted to impeach the Speaker of the state House of Assembly.
The latest resignations add another layer to Zamfara’s rapidly changing political landscape, following a major realignment earlier in 2026 that saw Governor Lawal and the state Assembly move from the PDP to the APC.
