Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, invoking the fate of former military Head of State Sani Abacha as he warned about the uncertainty of political ambition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Melaye, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the remarks in a post on X on Wednesday. He argued that political endorsements alone do not determine a leader’s destiny, stressing what he described as the “God factor” in human affairs.
According to him, Abacha had secured the backing of all five registered political parties during Nigeria’s military era and was widely expected to transition into a civilian president before his sudden death in 1998.
“There is a God factor in the affairs of men. Tinubu does not understand this. Abacha was endorsed by all the five political parties at that time,” Melaye wrote.
He added: “There was no contest, he was already cruising to become a civilian president. God picked His phone and called Abacha.
“When God calls you, there is no network failure. That God has not gone on omugo, Tinubu watch it.”
Melaye’s comments come amid growing political realignments and discussions surrounding the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures increasingly criticising the Tinubu administration and positioning their parties ahead of the next electoral cycle. Neither the Presidency nor the All Progressives Congress (APC) had responded publicly to Melaye’s remarks at the time of filing this report.
