Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has formally transferred executive powers to his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, following the approval of his annual leave by the Oyo State House of Assembly.
The transfer of authority was conveyed in a letter read during plenary by the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin.
According to the letter, Governor Makinde will proceed on his annual leave in line with constitutional provisions, while Deputy Governor Lawal will serve as Acting Governor throughout the period of the governor’s absence.
The House unanimously approved the governor’s request, paving the way for the temporary transfer of executive responsibilities.
The development ensures continuity in governance and administration, with the Acting Governor expected to oversee the affairs of the state until Governor Makinde resumes duty after his leave.
The transfer of power is in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which empowers a deputy governor to act as governor whenever the substantive governor is on leave or otherwise unable to discharge the functions of the office.
The exact duration of Governor Makinde’s leave was not disclosed during the plenary.
