The Olubosin of Ifetedo in Ife South Local Government Area of Osun State, Oba Akinola Oyetade Akinrera, has reportedly died.
The monarch, who ascended the throne in 2018, reportedly died on Friday, October 2, 2026, according to a report by Osun Defender.
However, the palace had yet to issue an official statement confirming the monarch’s death as of the time of the report. Condolence messages had nevertheless begun circulating on social media.
Oba Akinrera was a lawyer and had worked with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, after earlier serving as a teacher and a police officer.
He joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1988 and served until 1992, when he moved to the NNPC in Lagos.
He later studied Law, obtaining a Diploma in Law from Lagos State University in 1993 before proceeding to the University of Lagos, where he graduated with a Law degree in 2004.
Before becoming the Olubosin, Akinrera rose through the traditional hierarchy of Ifetedo. He became Agoro of Ifetedo in 2008, was later elevated to Otun and subsequently became Balogun.
Following the death of the then Olubosin, Oba Isaac Adebare Ilori, in 2018, Akinrera emerged as his successor and was crowned Olubosin of Ifetedo later that year.
The late monarch was also known for his involvement in the development of Ifetedo, including efforts around education, infrastructure and peaceful coexistence among residents.
In 2022, he publicly engaged with political leaders during campaigns in the state, while in June 2026, the palace hosted ADC governorship candidate Najeem Salaam during a visit to Ifetedo.
His reported death comes amid ongoing development challenges in Ifetedo, the headquarters of Ife South Local Government Area and host community of the Osun State University College of Law.
Further details on the circumstances surrounding his reported death and arrangements by the palace and community are expected.
