Just In: Senate Approves ₦50 Million Compensation for Families of Victims Killed in Oyo Oriire School Abduction

The Nigerian Senate has approved a ₦50 million compensation package for the families of five individuals who lost their lives during the abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The decision was announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Wednesday’s plenary session, where lawmakers paid tribute to the victims and expressed condolences to their families.
Akpabio described the deaths as a painful sacrifice in the country’s ongoing battle against insecurity, stressing that the National Assembly stands with the bereaved families in their time of grief.
According to the Senate President, the ₦50 million donation is intended to provide immediate support to the affected families while demonstrating the government’s commitment to recognising the sacrifices made by those who lost their lives during the tragic incident.
The Senate also commended the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for their efforts in the rescue operation that led to the safe release of the abducted pupils and teachers after weeks in captivity.
Lawmakers reiterated the need for sustained security operations across the country, particularly in vulnerable communities, to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of schoolchildren and educational institutions.
The approval of the compensation comes amid renewed calls for stronger security measures and improved protection of schools following the tragic Oriire abduction, which sparked nationwide concern over the safety of students and teachers in Nigeria.
