Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been conferred with the prestigious traditional title of Atayese of Yorubaland by the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, during a ceremony at the ancient Iwo Palace in Osun State.
The honour was bestowed on Wednesday during VeryDarkMan’s visit to the palace alongside members of the Ratels Movement, where he was warmly received by the monarch, palace chiefs, supporters, and residents who gathered to witness the event.
Videos circulating on social media showed the outspoken activist observing Yoruba customs by prostrating before the Oluwo as a mark of respect before exchanging pleasantries with the royal father.
In a symbolic moment during the ceremony, the Oluwo personally dressed VeryDarkMan in traditional Yoruba regalia before officially conferring on him the title of Atayese of Yorubaland, drawing cheers from those in attendance.
The event quickly became one of the top trending topics online, with clips from the palace attracting thousands of reactions. While many Nigerians congratulated VeryDarkMan on the honour, others praised the monarch for celebrating Yoruba culture and tradition.
VeryDarkMan, known for his outspoken advocacy on social issues, anti-corruption campaigns, and public interest matters, has built a massive following across social media through his commentary on governance and accountability.
