Ibadan Circular Road: Oyo Govt Begins Fresh Compensation for Affected Property Owners

By Aliyu Oyewole
The Oyo State Government has commenced another round of compensation payments to property owners affected by the ongoing construction of the Ibadan Circular Road project.
The development follows the state government’s earlier approval of about ₦5.8 billion for the payment of compensation to more than 900 property owners whose properties are affected by the project.
The compensation exercise is aimed at addressing the concerns of residents whose houses, buildings and other properties were demolished or acquired to give way to the road project.
In an earlier phase of the exercise, the government paid ₦780 million to 193 property owners affected by the first segment of the project. The payment represented the fourth batch of compensation beneficiaries.
The state government had explained that a total of 298 property owners were identified as being affected along the first segment, with 105 remaining at the time of the previous payment exercise.
The Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Williams Akin-Funmilayo, said the screening process was necessary to ensure that only legitimate property owners received the payments and to prevent impersonation.
The latest development is expected to provide relief to more residents affected by the ambitious road project, which cuts across several parts of Ibadan.
The compensation process has, however, remained a major issue surrounding the project, with some affected residents previously calling on the government to expedite payment.
In August 2026, some victims appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to ensure that outstanding compensation was paid before the end of his administration.
The Ibadan Circular Road project is designed to improve connectivity around the city, ease traffic congestion and open up new areas for economic and residential development.
The state government has repeatedly maintained that it would ensure that deserving property owners affected by the project receive appropriate compensation.
