Barcelona have announced the signing of 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri from Manchester City in a major transfer that sees the midfielder return to Spain after seven years in England.

The 30-year-old has signed a four-year contract with Barcelona that will keep him at Camp Nou until 2030.

Rodri joins the Catalan giants for a reported fee of around £65 million, bringing an end to his successful seven-year spell at Manchester City.

The Madrid-born midfielder had been linked with a possible move to Real Madrid following his impressive international performances for Spain, but Barcelona moved to secure his signature.

Rodri played a key role in Manchester City’s historic treble-winning campaign in 2022/23, which included the club’s first UEFA Champions League title. He also helped Spain secure a major international triumph during his time away from the national team setup.

Speaking at his unveiling at Camp Nou, Rodri said he was excited about starting a new chapter with Barcelona and targeting major trophies.

“I’m very happy and excited about this new stage in my career. It’s a fresh challenge, a chance to experience new things and feel that excitement again,” he said.

“I’m here to compete for everything, for big things like the Champions League.

“I’ve come to a hugely ambitious club that really suits my personality, so I’ll try to help in every way I can to achieve our objectives this season.”

Rodri has endured long-term injury problems in recent seasons but remains one of the most decorated midfielders in world football.

The former Villarreal academy player said he was also looking forward to working with Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick, describing the German’s tactical approach as an opportunity for further development.

“I’m happy to have a coach who I think will bring a lot to my career. It’s a style that I think is somewhat different from what I’ve experienced before, so it will be enriching and help me grow as a player,” Rodri said.

“It’s a pleasure to be at Barça. I’ll give 100% of everything I have.”

During his seven years at Manchester City, Rodri won four Premier League titles and 12 major trophies, establishing himself as one of the most influential defensive midfielders of his generation.
