Just In: Helicopter Crashes Near Naval Base In Ondo

By The Nigeria Times

Panic spread across Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday after a helicopter crashed in a swampy area of the coastal community.

The incident occurred in the morning in an area opposite the naval base, with residents reportedly drawn to the scene following the crash.

Details of the incident remained sketchy as of Monday afternoon, while authorities were still working to establish the identity of the aircraft, the number of people on board and the circumstances that led to the crash.

Several people were feared dead, but an official casualty figure had not been released at the time of filing this report.

The Chairman of Ilaje Local Government Area, Maurice Oripelaye, confirmed that a helicopter had crashed in the area.

Oripelaye said military equipment was found at the crash site, although he could not confirm the number of personnel who may have been aboard the aircraft.

According to him, the helicopter had been badly burnt, making it difficult to immediately determine the number of occupants.

A separate report quoted Oripelaye as saying the aircraft was burnt beyond recognition and that efforts were underway to establish.

The Ondo State Police Command also confirmed the reported aircraft crash in the Igbokoda axis.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said investigations were ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

He urged residents and members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading information that had not been verified.

“The Ondo State Police Command confirms the reported aircraft crash in the Igbokoda axis of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State on Monday, 5th October 2026,” the police said, according to reports.

The identity and operator of the helicopter had not been officially disclosed as of the time of filing this report.

There was also no immediate official confirmation that the aircraft belonged to the military, although reports from the area indicated that military equipment was recovered from the crash site.

The aircraft’s mission, point of departure and intended destination were similarly unclear.

The difficult terrain around the crash site has also complicated immediate access, with reports indicating that the helicopter came down in a swampy or riverine area.

Residents reportedly heard a loud sound before discovering that an aircraft had gone down in the area. Rescue and security personnel subsequently moved towards the crash site as authorities began efforts to determine the extent of the damage and possible casualties.

Igbokoda is a major riverine community in Ilaje, an oil-producing area of Ondo State where helicopters are also used for offshore and oil-related operations.

However, there was no official indication that the crashed aircraft was connected to an oil and gas operation.

As of Monday afternoon, authorities had yet to provide a definitive account of what caused the crash or confirm the identities and fate of those who may have been aboard.

The Nigerian aviation and security authorities are expected to provide further information as the crash site is assessed and rescue operations continue.

The Nigeria Times will continue to monitor developments and publish confirmed details as they emerge.
