Travellers and airport workers were thrown into panic on Sunday after a fire broke out at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, August 2, prompted an emergency response from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria as firefighters moved swiftly to contain the blaze.
In a statement released on its official channels, FAAN confirmed that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) had been deployed to the affected terminal.
“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) wishes to inform the public that a fire incident has occurred at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos,” the authority said.
It added that emergency personnel were actively working to bring the situation under control.
Despite the panic caused by the incident, FAAN assured the public that no casualties or fatalities had been recorded.
“There have been no reported casualties or loss of life. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” the statement noted.
The cause of the fire has not yet been disclosed, while authorities continue efforts to fully contain the incident and assess the extent of the damage.
The latest fire comes just months after a similar incident at Terminal 1 of the airport in February, when flames destroyed critical air-to-ground communication equipment belonging to the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency.
The earlier incident forced air traffic controllers to rely on emergency backup systems to maintain flight operations. NAMA’s Managing Director, Farouk Umar, had described the damage as a significant setback, saying the fire completely disrupted the agency’s air-to-ground communication infrastructure.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations into Sunday’s fire continue.
