Premier League side Sunderland have completed the signing of experienced Belgian defender Thomas Meunier on a free transfer, with the 34-year-old putting pen to paper on a two-year contract ahead of the new season.
The Black Cats confirmed the arrival of the 83-cap Belgium international on Wednesday, adding one of Europe’s most experienced defenders to their squad as they prepare for a campaign that includes both Premier League and UEFA Europa League football.
Meunier joins Sunderland after leaving French Ligue 1 outfit Lille, bringing with him a wealth of experience gained across Belgium, France, Germany and Turkey. During his glittering career, he won three Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain and was a key member of Belgium’s celebrated “Golden Generation,” earning 83 international caps.
Speaking after completing the move, Meunier expressed his excitement about beginning a new chapter in England.
“I am hugely excited and honoured to join Sunderland. I’m very happy to be here and to begin this new chapter in my career,” he said.
The veteran full-back revealed that the opportunity to finally play in the Premier League, coupled with Sunderland’s ambitious project and European football, played a decisive role in his decision.
“The Premier League is one of the most competitive and exciting leagues in the world, and it’s a challenge I’ve wanted to experience,” Meunier added.
“When I spoke with the club, I was impressed by the ambition, the project and the desire to keep moving forward. Competing in Europe was also a big factor because, as a player, you always want to test yourself against the best teams and compete for trophies.”
Sunderland’s Director of Football, Florent Ghisolfi, hailed the signing, describing Meunier as a player whose experience and leadership will be invaluable both on and off the pitch.
“Thomas brings a wealth of experience, leadership and professionalism,” Ghisolfi said. “He understands what it takes to compete for success, and we’re confident his mentality and character will have a positive influence on the squad.”
He added that the club believes the Belgian international will make a significant contribution as Sunderland continue their ambitious project.
Meunier’s arrival represents another statement of intent from Sunderland as the club strengthens its squad with proven international quality in pursuit of success both domestically and in Europe.
