Professor Peter Olapegba Emerges University of Ibadan’s 14th Vice-Chancellor

The University of Ibadan (UI) has appointed Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as its 14th Vice-Chancellor following a competitive selection process conducted by the institution’s Governing Council.
The appointment was approved at the conclusion of the Council’s meeting held on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, after members considered the report of the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board, which recommended Professor Olapegba as the most qualified candidate for the position.
According to a statement issued by the University’s Directorate of Public Communication, the office of the Vice-Chancellor will become vacant on November 1, 2026, prompting the Governing Council to commence the appointment process in line with the University’s governing laws.
The Council advertised the position in April 2026 through three national newspapers and the university’s official bulletin. Six applications were initially received before the institution’s Search Team, constituted in accordance with the University Act, identified two additional candidates, bringing the total number of applicants to eight.
On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, the Governing Council interviewed all eight candidates and assessed them using approved evaluation guidelines. Five candidates emerged on the merit list and proceeded to the final stage of the selection process.
The Joint Council-Senate Selection Board, comprising representatives of both the Governing Council and the Senate as stipulated by law, conducted the final interviews on Wednesday before recommending Professor Olapegba for appointment.
Professor Olapegba currently serves as the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration). He will assume office as the 14th Vice-Chancellor of Nigeria’s premier university on November 1, 2026.
