Just In: Wike vows to resign if Tinubu loses FCT, Rivers in 2027

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has vowed to resign from office if President Bola Tinubu loses either the Federal Capital Territory or Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election.
Wike made the declaration on Wednesday while receiving members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja.
The former Rivers State governor said his political performance in the two territories would determine whether he remains worthy of his position as FCT Minister.
According to Wike, he would announce his resignation on January 17, 2027, if Tinubu fails to secure victory in both the FCT and Rivers State.
“If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT.”
Wike also reaffirmed his support for Tinubu’s bid for a second term, saying he was working to mobilise political support for the President across the FCT and Rivers.
He had previously said he intended to deliver both territories for Tinubu, describing them as areas where he has significant political influence.
The minister’s latest declaration comes amid intensified political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 presidential election and his continued support for Tinubu despite remaining a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Wike also endorsed former FCT Senator Philip Aduda for the Senate during the engagement, while indicating that his political coalition would support candidates across party lines in the territory.
The 2027 presidential election is scheduled for January 16, 2027, according to reports of Wike’s remarks.
