President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway using concrete pavement, marking a major step in the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the country’s road infrastructure.
The approval is expected to enhance the durability of one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, which serves as a vital transport corridor linking Lagos, the nation’s commercial hub, with several states across the South-West and other parts of the country.

The decision to adopt concrete pavement reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to constructing longer-lasting roads capable of withstanding heavy traffic and reducing the frequency of repairs.
Officials believe the new construction method will provide a more resilient roadway, improve safety for motorists and lower long-term maintenance costs.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway remains one of Nigeria’s most strategic highways, facilitating the movement of passengers, agricultural produce and goods between Lagos and the hinterland.
Concrete pavement expected to improve durability
Concrete pavement is widely regarded as more durable than conventional asphalt, particularly on highways that experience high volumes of heavy-duty vehicles.
The reconstruction is expected to extend the lifespan of the expressway, improve driving conditions and minimise disruptions caused by recurring maintenance works.
Industry experts have also noted that concrete roads can offer better resistance to weather conditions and heavy axle loads, making them suitable for critical national infrastructure.

The reconstruction forms part of the Tinubu administration’s broader infrastructure agenda aimed at improving connectivity, reducing travel time and supporting economic growth.
