Tinubu Hails Babangida at 85, Says Former Military President Left Indelible Mark on Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd.), on his 85th birthday, describing him as an elder statesman whose leadership left a lasting imprint on Nigeria.

Tinubu, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Babangida had impacted the country in ways that distinguished his administration in Nigeria’s history.

The President described the former military leader as an outstanding military officer and statesman whose career culminated in his emergence as Head of State following the 1985 coup.

Tinubu acknowledged the controversies surrounding Babangida’s years in power but said his eight-year administration had produced enduring effects on the country’s political, economic and geographical development.

“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape,” Tinubu said.

According to the President, Babangida’s administration expanded the national economy, developed infrastructure and established agencies and institutions that have continued to contribute to national development.

He also credited the former military President with playing a significant role in the creation of states, saying his foresight and sense of equity helped shape Nigeria’s current geographical structure.

“But for his foresight, wisdom, and sense of equity and fairness, many states in the federation might not exist today,” Tinubu said.

The President said Babangida’s contributions to the country had secured him a permanent place in Nigeria’s history, adding that his legacy would continue to generate discussion and interest among successive generations.

Tinubu also commended the former military leader for remaining engaged with national affairs despite his retirement from active public service.

He noted that Babangida, who lives at his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State, continues to provide counsel and guidance on issues affecting the nation.

“His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations,” the President added.

Tinubu wished the former military President continued good health, strength and longevity as he marks his 85th birthday.

“May Almighty Allah keep you with us for many more years to come,” the President said.
